Gorillaz – episode 3 (2005-2007)
In this third part of our series on British virtual band Gorillaz, we move on to their 2005 album Demon Days. It should be obvious by now that Damon Albarn is not averse to collaborating with other artists. Dennis Hopper and Ike Turner are the first to appear in this episode. We conclude the segment on Demon Days, the band’s second studio album, with a number of powerful songs.
As with their debut album, Gorillaz also released a bonus album containing all the remixes and b-sides, titled D-Sides. We are now in the year 2007. The band continues to sample copiously, and they even sample their own work at times. The sarcastic undertones are eventually exchanged for a more serious tone, however.
We conclude this episode with remixes by Metronomy and The DFA. James Murphy is one of the members of the latter act. From 2002, we also got to know him as a member of LCD Soundsystem. More on them in the next episode, because this story is still far from over.
