The Palace of Nostalgia

Musical dreaming. Life is a dream, but dreaming is not living,’ Constantijn Huygens claimed.

An hour full of musical dreams: opera singer Marilyn Horne with Stephen Foster’s ancient ‘Beautiful Dreamer’ (which is actually about death), the French jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty gives musical shape to ‘the country house of his dreams’.

Also: Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong (‘Dream a little dream of me’) – and a failed attempt by Robert Mitchum to record that one too, trumpeter Roy Eldridge (‘Dreamy’), Helen Merrill (‘Dream of you’) and Billie Holiday (‘Dream of life’)

Furthermore: Perry Como met The Fontane Sisters (‘A dreamer’s holiday’), Sarah Vaughan (‘Dreamer’),

Frans Halsema (‘Dromen’), Fay Claassen (‘Dreamdancing’).

We will be listening to the pre-war German schlager-singer Rudi Schuricke on dreamland Hawaii, the ever-confident sounding British duo Flanagan & Allen (‘Dreaming’), Bing Crosby with Paul Whiteman’s band (‘I’m a dreamer’)

From the Boulevard of Broken Dreams saxophonist Henk Koekkoek on broken dreams (‘Beguine des rêves brisées’), Johnny Brandon (‘Dreamer’s highway’) and Mel Walker (‘Dreamin’ blues’).
