Afghanistan: The traditional music of Herât.
Located in western Afghanistan at the center of Islamic culture in the 15th century, the city of Herât has produced vocal and instrumental music uniquely identified as Herati. The 14 tracks in these field recordings, shot between 1973 and 1977, reveal influences from both Iranian and Indian music. The songs are sung in Dari (the Afghan dialect of Farsi), accompanied by traditional instruments such as the dutâr, the long-necked lute, the hand-pumped Indian harmonium and tabla. The lyrics are often based on texts derived from classical Persian poetry.
