Beautiful chamber music form the classical era: Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, performed by Quatuor Mosaïques and the Chiaruscuro Quartet

You’ll be listening to one of the op. 20 quartets by Joseph Hayden, performed by the renowned Quatuor Mosaïques. Hayden manages to put the string quartet on the map with this opus number, also laying the foundation for the genre, which, under Mozart and Beethoven, will become the classical genre par excellence. The equally renowned but much younger Chiaruscuro Quartet will be performing an early divertimento, as well as one of Mozart’s top quartets. Even though Mozart’s KV428 is an homage to Hayden, it greatly surpasses the master. Beethoven’s op.74 can easily be called one of Western music history’s greatest masterpieces, this also applies to the Mozart piano quartet, which is what the Van Swieten Society closes our programme with.
