Composer: Thelonious Monk

Thelonious Monk Live in New York and San Francisco

On October 10, 1917, one of jazz’s most important composers was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Apart from being a composer, he was also a pianist and bandleader. I am talking about Thelonious Monk.

Thelonious Monk, also named the High Priest of Bebop, had a difficult start in jazz. An altercation with Bud Powell and a bag of marijuana had caused Monk to lose his cabaret card, making it impossible for him to play in clubs in New York. Around 1956, this was no longer an issue, and from that time on, Thelonious Monk played in the summer for several years at The Five Spot café, a small club in Greenwich Village, New York.
