The wayward Prokofiev

wed 25 jan 2023 12:00 hrs
Composer: Sergej Prokofiev

Sergei Prokofiev #49. A longer-running docudrama about one of the most prominent and stand-alone composers of the 20th century.

Every two weeks for an hour, ‘the wayward Prokofiev’ focuses on the life and work of the Russian 20th century composer Sergei Prokofiev, undoubtedly one of the greatest composers of the 20th century.

Today you will hear his not so successful cello concerto from 1939 as well as his better appreciated songs from 1939. The latter were, coincidentally or not, better suited to Stalin’s social realism. We conclude with a dash of piano by the Polish-Russian composer Witold Malizewski, who died in 1939.

  • Sergei Prokofiev. Concerto for cello and orchestra op. 58 in e (1938). Russian State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Valery Polyansky with Alexander Ivashkin as cellist.
  • Sergei Prokofiev. Songs for voice and piano op. 79 (Nos. 1-7) (1939) Sergei Aleksashkin (bass) and Yuri Serov (piano).
  • Witold Maliszewski. Variations for piano opus. 5 no. 4 (1905)
    Mateusz Krzyzowski (piano)
