In the same year 1922, in which the two movements of Van Gilse were created, the barely 18-year-old Let Stants composed her Second String Quartet, more or less under the guidance of her teacher, Willem Pijper. In 1923, Willem Pijper came with his Third String Quartet. Both Pijper and his pupil loved a southern glow in their quartets. The same applies to the concise String Quartet by Henriette Bosmans, who also studied with Willem Pijper. Her teacher’s Fourth String Quartet sounds more laconic than that of the student.
