¡Mambo!

wed 19 apr 2023 00:00 hrs

In this 8th episode, Mambo pays tribute to the Cuban music genre “Charanga” for the last time. This genre is a typical Cuban product, originating from French chamber music and filled with African elements.

By adding the Cuban “son,” the Charanga eventually made its way to Havana. In the 1930s, the “Mambo” was born due to an accent shift. It would eventually be called “Salsa” in New York City.

This episode shines a spotlight on the Mambo and Charanga in Havana, Puerto Rico, New York City, and even Africa. Charanga groups from New York went to West Africa to record albums. This led to the emergence of several Charanga-like orchestras in Mali, for example.

The popularity of Charanga was exceptionally high in the 1960s. Although Puerto Ricans in New York fully embraced it, the genre never caught on in Puerto Rico itself. In the 1950s, bandleader Enrique Jorrin adapted his music somewhat. He called the new dance the “cha-cha-cha,” which is considered Charanga’s musical end product.
