The cello sings.

Cellists often hear it said: how beautifully your cello sings. Some adventurous cellists and composers take this to heart and combine singing with cello playing.

Sometimes the cellists themselves sing, while other times composers combine the forces of a vocalist with those of a cello. In this themed broadcast, some beautiful examples from the past and present are showcased. The passionate work of Russian-Dutch cellist and composer Maya Fridman, whose intense song album was recently released, is at the center. In addition, singing cellos by Meredith Monk, Arthur Russell, Marion von Tilzer, and Maxim Shalygin can be heard.
