¡Mambo!

wed 24 apr 2024 00:00 hour

Today’s Mambo is all about the Cuban song genre ‘bolero’. Over the next hour, you’ll hear different Latino musicians such as Beny More, Daniel Santos en Omara Portuendo play ‘bolero’ music.

Boleros have been around for a very long time. Around 1880, there were buskers who played ballads with nonsense lyrics. They were called boleristas.

The bolero emerged primarily in the 1920s, when many musicians moved from Santiago to the capital city of Havana. During that time, the bolero evolved into how we know it today. Especially in the 1950s, the genre reached its peak.

We’ll kick off this 56th edition of Mambo with a bolero by the renowned Buena Vista Social Club (pictured above). This band, which has often delighted Dutch audiences, will appear again later this hour, with the song Veinte Aňos.
