Radio Romantica

mon 29 apr 2024 12:00 hrs
Composer: Jean Sibelius

Songs by Jean Sibelius

Jean Sibelius’ songs are usually set to Swedish lyrics. Jean grew up in a Swedish-speaking Finnish family, making him very comfortable with this language and its poets.

During this episode of Radio Romantica, you can listen to a selection of songs by this Finnish master. These are specifically songs that also have orchestral versions. Often, the composer himself orchestrated his songs, usually at the request of singers or conductors. But he often left it to others, such as his son-in-law Jussi Jalas, who, of course, tried his best not to upset his father-in-law.

World-renowned Finnish soprate Soile Isokoski (pictured above) performs, accompanied by the orchestra of Helsinki, conducted by excentric conductor Leif Segerstam.
