Today in Mambo, the start of a 3-part series about Puerto Rican musician Bobby Rodriguez from New York.
Bobby is a typical multi-instrumentalist. He plays saxophone, flute, piano and percussion and in addition, he is also a singer, composer and the leader of his own band: la Compaňia.
The band started in 1974. It is a music group that plays a mix of Cuban, Puerto Rican and also brass band music, larded with a fair amount of funk, soul and jazz. We will start this episode with four numbers from the 1975 debut album by Bobby Rodriguez and his Compaňia.
On the same album, there is a famous composition by Ruben Blades: ‘numero 6’, the underground line number 6 that goes from Manhattan to the South Bronx. This number 6 is the primary mode of transportation for Puerto Ricans in New York City.
