¡Mambo!

wed 28 jan 2026 00:00 hrs

In today’s Mambo the second and final episode about the Puerto Rican composer and percussionist Willie Rosario.

When Willie was 16 years old he already had his own orchestra. A few years later he moved to New York City, where he worked as a timbalero in the orchestra of, among others, Noro Morales. The first two tracks in this broadcast are by Morales’s orchestra.

Today, we put Willie’s music from the 1980s in the spotlight. During that period ‘Salsa Romántica’ came into fashion. Willie wanted nothing to do with it and referred to the genre as something like bland sauce. Nevertheless, he too had to adapt his music for the sake of record sales, although his musical adjustments were minimal.

In 1989, Willie celebrated the 30th anniversary of his orchestra with the release of a new album. In this hour you will hear two tracks from that record.
