Contemporary music. Xenakis and Dusapin.
The most famous pupil of Iannis Xenakis (1922–2001, photo) is Pascal Dusapin (1955). They found common ground in their love of the work of Edgard Varèse, but the differences between master and pupil are greater than the similarities. Xenakis, trained as an architect, consulted mathematical models in his compositional process, while Dusapin was more concerned with the development of natural processes. Dusapin made a strong impression with a number of magnificent operas, while Xenakis remained the man of fierce dissonances with their inescapable, powerful impact. Yet there was also room for stillness in his oeuvre. In this episode of Contemporary Music, both sides are explored.
