¡Mambo!

wed 18 feb 2026 00:00 hrs

Today, Mambo is devoted to the Latino music group Grupo Folklorico y Experimental Nuevayorquino.

In 1975 and 1976 this formation produced two albums that are still regarded as an outstanding blend of Cuban and Puerto Rican roots with the modern sound of New York City.

Grupo Folklorico y Experimental Nuevayorquino consisted of a number of highly renowned Latino musicians, supplemented by family members and friends. The core of the group were members of Conjunto Libre, including timbalero Manny Oquendo (photo), bassist Andy Gonzalez and trumpeter Chocolate.

Most of them were Puerto Rican and came from the Bronx in New York. Many had attended the same primary school, where virtually all pupils received music lessons and learned to play an instrument – a true nursery for musical talent.
