With the compositions on the CD Northern Horizons, horn player Markus Kaskuniitty and pianist Martin Sturfält pay tribute to the far north.
In Ice Feathers, Piers Hellawell reflects fragile ice patterns, while Albert Schnelzer in I Remember River Clear calls to mind the Swedish river Klarälven (BIS). We also hear Thomas Adès’s Exterminating Angel Symphony, his adaptation of the opera based on Buñuel’s film, performed by the Minnesota Orchestra conducted by Thomas Søndergaard (Pentatone). Lastly, music from Black Rainbow (Challenge), on which violinist Julija Hartig explores her Eastern European roots together with Akim Moiseenkov, followed by movements from the Violin Sonata by Fazıl Say with pianist Reineke Broekhans.
