Egypt: Halim 1970s Live!

We’ll listen to excperts of live recordings of the Egyptian idol Abdel Halim Hafez (Halim), Halim was probably the last hero of the long Arab romantic song,These live concerts, performed by large hybrid orchestras or ensembles, typically featured a small number of extended compositions—some lasting up to an hour—with distinct sections (in different modi/Maqams), lengthy instrumental passages, and a rich blend of Eastern and Western instruments, often allowing space for improvisation and solo performances. This tradition of the long Arabic live song reached its peak in the early 1970s , then gradually faded away, especially after Halim’s death in 1977. By the early 1980s, the “new” pop song was typically much shorter in length, performed by much smaller bands, and primarily recorded and released as studio-produced tracks.
