Roby Lakatos. (22:12 min)
He was born in 1965 into a family of Roma violinists, descendants of János Bihari, a composer who influenced Brahms and Liszt. At the age of nine, Roby Lakatos made his public debut as first violinist in a Roma orchestra. In 1984, he won first prize for classical violin at the Béla Bartók Conservatory in Budapest. For the following ten years, he led the house band of a restaurant in Brussels, where he was praised by Yehudi Menuhin for his performance of a piece by Liszt. In March 2004, he performed with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Genius of the Violin festival under the direction of Maxim Vengerov.

Black Ox Orkestar. (20:24 min)
This album is a compelling mix of original compositions and new arrangements of pieces from various Eastern European songbooks. The band wanted to broaden the definition of Jewish diaspora music by getting to know and reinterpreting songs and rhythms from across Slavic and Balkan Europe. The lyrics are in Yiddish and speak powerfully about the bloody history and the persistent contradictions of the Jewish diaspora and the ‘return’. In the background is a fully acoustic performance of sincere soul and intensely original arrangements that never feel forced. This is modern folk music with Eastern European roots, played powerfully, without sterile production and/or cheap sentimentality.

Pharaoh’s Daughter. (16:11 min)
Basya Schechter founded Pharaoh’s Daughter in 1995 while studying at Barnard College in America. The band name refers to Basya Schechter’s first name, a Yiddish variant of Bithiah, the biblical daughter of the Pharaoh.
In 1999, the album Daddy’s Pockets was released, and later that year they signed a contract with Knitting Factory Records. Pharaoh’s Daughter’s music is inspired by American folk, Jewish klezmer, avant-garde, new age, Renaissance, electronic music, and music from the Middle East.
