A Second Chance for Hummel

Producer and host Thijs Bonger continues his search through the life and works of Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837).
Today Part XVII.

On his quest through the life and work of Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837), producer Thijs Bongers encounters many composers who strongly relied on Hummel. In 1815, he wrote a series of 24 preludes in all major and minor keys. In this series, Hummel uses the prelude as a detached composition for the first time. This work has inspired so many composers to write comparable series that one cannot comprehend this groundbreaking composition has never been put on to CD. Luckily, a live recording does exist, snatched from YouTube. As an extra, you will hear a number of remarkable preludes by later composers who have been hugely inspired by this format, devised by Hummel: Chopin, Lyadov, Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, and Shostakovich.
