Acoustic Roots

fri 15 oct 2021 21:00 hour

In our ‘living room’, Karin van den Boogaert and Carolien Cleiren receive all manner of World Music performers.

Tonight’s Acoustic Roots features guests Nizar Rohana, ud player and Maarten Ornstein, clarinettist. (Repeat)

Nizar Rohana and Maarten Ornstein are two members of the Madar Ensemble, Madar means Orbit. Unfortunately, the three other members of the ensemble could not be present, but they promised that they will come and perform at Acoustic Roots at a later date.

The Madar Ensemble is a group which consists of five musicians from the Netherlands, Palestine, Jordan and Tunisia. They recently released the CD ‘Acamar’.
During Acoustic Roots Rohana and Ornstein will be performing several songs from this album as a duo.

Nizar Rohana is Palestinian from the village of Isifya on Mount Carmel. His father played ud during local festivities and his mother accompanied him as a percussionist.

Rohana has been playing instruments from an early age and the ud from the age of 13. After extensive studies in ud performance, composition and musicology, Rohana progressed to composing modern ud compositions, inspired by western composers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and Brahms as well as eastern ones such as Tanburi Cemil Bey, Kemani Tatyus Efendi, Muhammad Al-Qasabji and Muhammad Abdel Wahab. Rohana has been living in the Netherlands since September 2013 where he is working on his PhD in Improvisation and Composition in solo ud performances at Leiden University Academy for Creative and Performing Arts. He plays in the Nizar Rohana Trio, the Madar Ensemble and gives solo performances.

Maarten Ornstein is a Dutch musician, composer and arranger from Amsterdam. He plays tenor saxophone, clarinet and bass clarinet. Sometimes he plays tarogato, electric saxophone, MPC and laptop computers. He leads the free funk ensemble DASH and performs as a soloist. He also performs together with lutenist Mike Fentrom, singer Rima Khcheich, poet and singer Jeannine Valeriano and pianist Sunna Gunnlaugs. He is a member of the group Splendor Amsterdam. He is always looking for new challenges, new musicians to work with, new rules to break and boundaries to cross.
