Schubert’s Piano Works for Four Hands – 1
This is the first episode of a programme series in which we will hear all piano works for four hands from Franz Schubert in the coming months. Several of these compositions are well-known, like Fantasie in F Minor, D940, and the first Marche Militaire, D733, but most works are relatively unknown. Eventually, Schubert wrote 47 compositions for piano for four hands – almost as many as for piano solo. Often, he wrote these pieces for his Schubertiades or for talented piano students, so he could play it together with them.
In this hour, and in the following episodes, you will hear performances by specialized piano duos, but famous duos such as Sviatoslav Richter and Benjamin Britten, as well.
