Composer: George Onslow

George Onslow – 1

This is the first – of what will be three – episodes about the French composer George Onslow. Onslow was born in Clermont Ferrand in 1784. His father was British (Edward Onslow) and his mother was French (Marie Rosalie de Bourdeilles de Brantôme. Onslow’s family was noble and owned large estates. He composed for his own pleasure, not for the money. Among others, Jan Ladislav Dussek and Johann Baptist Cramer taught him how to play the piano, and he learned composing from Antonin Reicha. In Onslow’s time, grand opera was very popular in Paris. Even though Onslow wrote four operas, he mostly focussed on composing chamber music. 36 string quartets, 34 string quartets, and 10 piano trios are part of his work.

In this hour you will hear some of Onslow’s piano works and his ‘Grand Quintetto’ for piano, violin, viola, cello, and double bass.
