The Glinka Quartet

Tonight, the entire programme is dedicated to the Russian Glinka Quartet, which existed between 1966 and 1977. Four graduates of the Moscow Conservatory formed the quartet. First violinist Alexander Arenkov and violist Misha Geller had already won several international competitions. The second violinist was Sergei Pishugin and the cellist  was Dmitri Ferschtman.

In 1969, the Glinka Quartet won first prize at the String Quartet Competition in Liège. They were praised in the media for their mastery and expressiveness. Despite the limitations of the Iron Curtain in those days, this Russian state quartet travelled all over the world and performed several times in the Netherlands. In 1978, violist Misha Geller and cellist Dmitri Ferschtman emigrated to the Netherlands, which meant the end of this successful quartet in Russia.

This hour features recordings of two quartets by Franz Schubert that are no longer available. As an encore, you will hear the slow part of String Quartet No. 3 by Dmitri Shostakovich.
