On ‘An Early Evening Stroll’: part II of the series ‘Felix and the string quartet’.
The principal part of today’s programme is a fierce, and sometimes even raw quartet that the 18-year-old Mendelssohn filled with a colourful mix of deep emotions: infatuation, heartbreak and mourning over the death of Beethoven, whom he idolised. That is why he incorporated references to Beethoven into the piece, which we will hear separately. The emotions in this piece are so raw that Felix quarreled over it with his father, who considered it uncivilised. But we can unabashedly enjoy this early masterpiece.
