Antiqua versus Nova

sun 30 nov 2014 15:00 hour
Composer: Anoniem

Old and New – Modern or Classic, monody – early polyphony. The focus will be at one specific musical change or major transformation in the history of Western European music at a time in Antiqua versus Nova. Episode 23: Christianization

In this episode of ‘Christianization’, polyphone Cypriote advents of O-antifones, compositions in a handwriting which are still intact and now lies in the Biblioteca Nazionale in Turin. This ‘new’ music comes from the Ars subtilior – end of the 14th century.
These O-antifones are surrounded with hymns by the monk Fulbert from Chartres, who lived around the Year 1000; religious music composed for the Chapel of the mighty French King Janus I of Lussignan, who held court at Cyprus and the Irish traditionals.
