Dutch jazz: Ann Burton
Singer Johanna Rafalowicz, because that was Ann Burton’s real name, was born on 4 March1933 in Amsterdam. Her mother came to the Netherlands from Poland three years earlier. Johanna never took singing lessons, but listened a lot to American singers like Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. She wanted to be in music and adopted the name Ann Burton around 1955, after British actor Richard Burton. Without a doubt, she was the most important post-war Dutch Jazz singer next to Rita Reys and Greetje Kauffeld. Ann Burton mostly sang ballads and had much respect for lyrics. At the end of the 1960s, she recorded the LP “Blue Burton”. On this record, she was accompanied by the Louis van Dijk trio, complemented by Piet Noordijk. She became instantly famous and was awarded an Edison for it in 1969. From 1970 to 1974, Burton lived and worked in Londen. She also worked in Japan a lot, where she became the most popular jazz singer after Ella Fitzgerald. She passed away on 29 Bovember 1989, much too young, at the age of 56.
