Between Dreams and Reality

tue 28 jul 2020 21:00 hrs
Composer: Albert Roussel

More music of Albert Roussel in part 15 of ‘Between dreams and reality’. This time, we focus on his chamber music.

In this episode we continue our journey through Albert Roussel’s music. We will dwell on the chamber music of this French composer. We start with the impressionist Piano Trio, opus 2 from 1902. This work consists of three parts: Modéré sans lenteur, Lent, and Très lent-vif et gaîment.

The next piece you will hear is called Divertissement, opus 6 from 1906. Divertissement stands for distraction, the playfulness of the piece. It is a work for  wind quintet and piano, which was an unusual composition in the beginning of the  20th century. In this work, once again, we can already hear the impressionist influences of Debussy. The music buzzes undulating, with a light character. Divertissement is performed by Paul Verhey, flute, Hans Roerade, oboe, Frank van den Brink, clarinet, Herman Jeurissen, horn, Jos de Lange, bassoon. On the piano you will hear, once more, Jet Röling.

Unfortunately, Roussel left us little piano music. We start with Suite opus 14 for piano from 1909-1910. Last week you already heard the 1st part as an encore, therefore you will now hear part 2 to 4, which are called Sicilienne, Bourrée and Ronde. The performing artist is pianist Emanuele Torquati.

Finally, you will hear an encore (if and as long as time allows): the 3rd part of the 1st Sonata opus 11 for violin and piano of Roussel. The performing artists are violinist Jean-Jacques Kantorow and the pianist Jet Röling.
