Bonum Est: a programme on Gregorian Chant. A journey along the Mediterranean Sea.
In the 23rd episode of Bonum Est you will hear recordings of various oral traditions along the Mediterranean Sea.
Somehow, the performance practice of the early Gregorian Chant might have been preserved in these traditions. Even though Gregorian Chant has been preserved in manuscripts with music notation from before the year 1000 BC, we do not know how it sounded at that time. We do know that Gregorian Chant originated from an oral tradition.
Most probably, the oral traditions along the Mediterranean Sea stylistically correspond much better to the information of the oldest Gregorian sources (since Solesmes) than to the conventional ideas. The main thing is how the music moves from one note to another. Since line notation, after the year 1000 BC, this early style probably slowly disappeared.
