Vibraphone player Lionel Hampton was born over 100 years ago (20 April 1908) and died in 2002.
Lionel Hampton Groups – part 1.
Possibly inspired by record company Brunswick’s success with records of small pickup groups led by pianist Teddy Wilson, Victor decided to take on a similar project with vibraphone player Lionel Hampton as the centre of it all. Between 1937 and 1941 they recorded about ninety pieces, a selection of which can be heard in this programme.
