Rodrigo Leão & Cinema Ensemble
A concert recording of Rodrigo Leão with the Cinema Ensemble, made at the Melkweg (Milky Way) in Amsterdam on 20 April 2011. The concert was an interesting one because it was its first (and only) performance on a Dutch podium.
Composer/musician Rodrigo Leão is a star in his home country of Portugal.
He was eighteen years old when he founded the pop band Sétima Legião, and was twenty-one when his second project, Madredeus, for which he played bass and keyboard, was produced. Both bands would go on to change the history and the image of Portuguese music.
In 1993, after five albums with Madredeus, Rodrigo Leão decided to go on as a soloist in order to have more freedom to further explore the musical spectrum with his compositions.
Leão has performed with his eight-man Cinema Ensemble for ten years now, consisting of strings, drum, contrabass, accordion, vocals and piano.
He has a very intuitive way of making music, but there are only a few clear elements such as film music and fado, tango and pop, chanson and classical music.
He says himself that his inspiration comes mainly from film and from everyday life.
During this performance, Leão plays five songs from his latest CD, A Mae, which was received well in Portugal. The singer is Ana Vieira.
