The Africa festival of Hertme 2014 took place in the weekend of 5 and 6 July this year. On Saturday, our colleageues of Radio 6 recorded the concerts, and the only female artist performed in the afternoon, the Cape verdian singer Nancy Vieira. The cool and clear timbre of Nancy Vieira’s voice gives the classical Morna style of Cape Verde a refreshing sound.
Nancy Vieira was born in 1975, the year when Cape Verde was declared independent. At the age of fourteen, she moved to Portugal, where she discovered her musical roots. In Cape Verdian music, you can usually hear the yearning of returning to the Islands.
The morna is the perfect song form to interpret these emotions. It’s one of the many styles that Nancy Vieira commands. Often, you can hear Brazilian influences in her music. She is accompanied by an excellent group of musicians, who all act as backing singers as well.
