The Africa festival Hertme 2014 started this year on Saturday afternoon July 5 with a concert by Aziz Sahmaoui & University of Gnawa. It was a spectacular beginning of the festival.
Singer/guitarist Aziz Sahmaoui plays Gnawa music. Gnawa is a fusion of the classic Sofi tradition combined with animistic influences from West Africa. The music is highly evoking trance and strongly resembles music that was brought by West African slaves.
Now Sahmaoui is experimenting with the combination of North African and Senegalese rhythms combined with the trance evoking Gnawa music.His band consists of Senegalese and Moroccan musicians, makes stirring music and can be heard at many festivals all over the world
