Hudaki Village Band live in Zaal 100, Amsterdam.
Tonight we will listen to music of the Hudaki Village Band from Ruthenia, the region in Zakarpattia Oblast, West Ukraine. In the last century this secluded mountainous area has been part of Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, USSR and finally Ukraine. The original inhabitants, the Ruthenians, had to share their country with different minorities every time, including Hungarians, Romanians, Roma’s, Germans and Jews. Hudaki makes use of this richness and releases songs and dances from the village Nizhnije Selisje and surrounding villages in their original, excellent shape. Since the fall of the Soviet Union the locals have found their own roots again and folk music is accepted again as a part of their identity. This concert by Hudaki was recorded in Amsterdam in Zaal 100 on 28 November last year. This recording fully shows the authentic and touching music of the group.
