Concert by Toumani & Sidiki Diabaté of 15 November 2014, Rasa, Utrecht.
The kora player Toumani Diabaté needs almost no introduction. This time, he performs with his son Sidiki in Rasa, Utrecht, a place where we have seen him already on stage. The Concertzender made a recording of this concert that took place on 15 November 2014. They were on tour because of the release of their CD Toumani & Sidiki, produced by Nick Gold at the label World Circuit. During the concert, they play some songs from that album.
Toumani and Sidiki Diabaté are descendants of the Mandé griots from Mali.
Sidiki is named after his well-known grandfather the kora player Sidiki (senior), a virtuoso and pioneer, who made the kora widely known as instrument.
In the musical tradition of the Mandé, the son is the rival of the father, and he needs to surpass the father.
Toumani gets a lot of recognition and is internationally well-known, plays at a lot of international tours and performances, both solo as with other well-known musicians. He is seen as the best kora player in the world.
Sidiki junior has a different playing style than his father. He plays more spirited, more staccato and has applied a waw-waw pedal on his kora. He is 23 years old and is already a star in his own country. Toumani plays more lyrical with a beautifully clear sound. They clearly enjoy their joint performances.
