Live recording of the Trio Qasyon during the Houtfestival in Haarlemmerhout on 19 June 2016
Trio Qasyon plays oriental music (Arabic and Turkish), both classical, folk and populair Arabic music. The trio consists of the Syrian sisters Manla: Jawa, on the ud and Shaza on the qanun, which is a board sitar, and Syrian percussionist Modar Salameh. Qasyon is named after the highest mountain of Syria.
Jawa Manla is one of the greatest musical talents from Syria. From a young age, she was touring as a professional musician through Egypt, Libanon, Oman and Turkey. She performed with renowned orchestras and was taught by famous ud players.
Jawa and her family were felt forced to flee Syria. Jawa wanted the Netherlands to get to know the rich Syrian culture. Together with the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble the sisters toured the Netherlands in November and December 2015, with the New Year’s Concert of the NBE on 1 January 2016 as their highlight.
