Gardel vs Corsini.
Carlos Gardel is, without a doubt, the most famous and well known tango singer of all times. Even people who don’t love tango recognize his voice from thousands. Today, 82 years after he tragically died in a plane crash, his records are still played on the radio in Argentina and its surroundings every day, and his CDs are for sale around the world in large numbers. Since 1912, in a time when it was not common for everyone to own a record player, he already filled an unbelievable number of 1000 records with songs. Even more unbelievable however, is that he was not the only tango singer. In the lovely programmes ‘Tango, Song of Buenes Aires’ and ‘Damas del Tango’ which were made for Concertzender by Joep à Campo, we have already enjoyed the many singers who poured out their tangos over the world in the beginning of the last century in Argentina and beyond. An unimaginable number of tangos were composed by prominent and skilled composers and copywriters.
One of the singers whose career equalled Gardel’s (born in France) was named Ignacio Corsini (born in Italy). If we browse through the 78 rpm records he made, we count as many as 750. Even though they worked in the same field they became friends, because of a concert they played together in their early careers. They almost never recorded the same songs, due to the gigantic quantity of music available. Nevertheless, it did happen once in a blue moon. The compiler of this programme thought it would be a good idea to look for titles that were recorded on 78 rmp records by both of them. This way, you may be able to decide which of the two singers you think is the best, because there are many people in the world of tango (mainly Argentina) who violently disagree on that. Also…you will hear how the 20s and 30s of the last century sounded.
