The early 20th century string quartet.
Europe is on the eve of the Great War and the Russian Revolution. A lot is happening musically, such as the impressionism in Debussy’s works, the expressionism of the Second Viennese School centred around Schönberg, Berg and Webern and the premiere of Stravinsky’s Sacre du printemps in 1913. In this period, the string quartet continued to be the ultimate form for composers to showcase their musical talent.
