Chamber music by Mozart, Beethoven, and Schumann
A varied programme these two hours of Concertzender Live Classical. Chamber music it is, but can you recall the last time you have heard the 1st mandolin sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven? He wrote this work for his friend, the Bohemian violinist Krumpholz, who cherished this small string instrument. So does Alon Sariel. His performance is surrounded by the song cycle An die ferne Geliebte, in which Beethoven presents himself without pardon as a forerunner of the great cycles of Schumann, Schubert, and Brahms, and the Twelve Variations on the aria Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen for cello and piano, of course to the aria of the bird-catcher Papageno from Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte. We also hear variations of the latter, but this time for violin and piano about the song Hélas, j’ai perdu mon amant. But unfortunately, Mozart was mistaken: the name of this French ariette actually is Au bord d’une fontaine. Do not fret, the music is just as good. Three musicians from Seattle play a Divertimento for Mozart;s reed trio and Elise Besemer puts her nails, not literally, in Beethoven’s great 10th violin sonata. Truly a masterpiece, but so is Beethoven’s sympathetic youthwork: a piano quartet from when he was 17 years old and wanted to have lessons from Mozart, but when he arrived in Vienna for that purpose, his great example was briefly in Prague for the premiere of Don Giovanni. Finally, you will hear brother and sister Nemstov from St Petersburg with Robert Schumann’s Phantasiestücke. A delightful composition for cello and piano by these acclaimed Russians.
