Live recordings. Today: Schubert, Hoffmeister and Beethoven.

A fantastic Schubert recital by the English soprano Carolyn Sampson and her regular accompanist Joseph Middleton is preceded by a piano quartet of Franz Anton Hoffmeister. In his days, the last decades of the 18th century, the composer was a well-known figure in and around Vienna. An excellent group of Dutch musicians, the ‘Van Swieten Society’, occupy themselves with the music of this (and other) composers. For us this is a fortunate matter, otherwise their notes would be shelved. In the following Schubert recital, well-known and less-known works are nicely alternated. Carloyn Sampson performs ‘Gretchen am Spinnrade’ and ‘Ave Maria’ next to unique pieces such as the grand ballades ‘Viola’ and ‘Blondel zu Marien’. The programme concludes with (again) ‘Van Swieten’, under the inspiring leadership of fortepianist Bart van Oort, with Beethoven’s Piano Trio Op. 1 No.2 .
