Sufism is a form of mysticism in Islam. Sufis want to come closer to the Supreme Being with mysticism. Music and dance are very useful for this.
In this programme we will hear two concerts with Sufi music. Perhaps we should say two ceremonies because this sacred music is not performed without the corresponding rituals. In the first concert, you will hear Gnawa Music, a Moroccon tradition, its musical roots originating from West Africa. The latter can be heard: drums and communal dance rhythms determine the sound. In the second concert, we will hear music from the Turkish Mevlevi Order. This comes closer to the music we as westerners think of when we think of Sufism: flute, qanun, oud, and Arabic scales. Dervish – the world-famous Sufi whirling dance – is danced on this music.
