An alternative to the North Sea Jazz Festival is what Ad Peijnenburg wanted with the South Dutch Jazz Festival. A smaller scale and significantly more adventurous.
In today’s episode, we’ll listen to two concerts from two different editions. They both offer unadulterated free jazz and music exactly as the performers want without thinking about the audience. In the first concert, the big boss is at centre stage: Peijnenburg improvises on the sax and other wind instruments while the British Alan Purvis does percussion. In the second concert, we’ll listen to, among others, the Rotterdamse Improvisatiepoel performing a forty-minute composition around the refinery in the port of Rotterdam – featuring all the sounds you’ll hear in said port.
