Chamber music: Beethoven, Dvořák, Weissenberg

Today’s programme of chamber music starts with a top hit from the repertoire. Beethoven’s Trio Op. 97 has the nickname “Archduke”. Rudolf, the Archduke of Austria, was Beethoven’s pupil. The great composer thought it a good idea to dedicate something to this influential man occasionally. He usually advised the monarch not to play it himself. It is well known that Beethoven’s notes are not particularly easy. The same goes for Dvořák’s, even though they seem extremely simple. His famous Dumky Trio is also on the programme. The dumky is a simple Bohemian dance that Dvořák often includes in his compositions. The Osiris Trio, which, as you may know, consists of Peter Brunt, Larissa Groeneveld and Ellen Corver, will give you a wonderful hour with these beautiful notes. Afterwards, Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin will play a special composition by his fellow keyboardist Alexis Weissenberg. The latter was a huge fan of chansonnier Charles Trenet. Weissenberg composed a piano fantasy on several melodies by the singer. To conclude this programme of Concertzender’s own recordings, you can listen to Dvořák’s great quintet. The Belgian ensemble St. George plays the work for string quartet and double bass.
