Great chamber music works from the classical period. Three world-class ensembles perform music that is worth listening to.
Haydn’s string quartet in F from his op.20 is like the starting shot for the genre that almost all composers in the centuries that followed would be captivated by. Here played by the world-famous Quatuor Mosaïques. Papa Haydn laid the foundation for the intelligent conversation without words that would become an inspiration for many composers. This was true for Mozart, who brought the genre to a higher level with his Divertimenti, but especially with his 6 string quartets that he dedicated to his role model Haydn. The grandiose Chiaroscuro Quartet plays the string quartet in E-flat, KV 428. A masterpiece! And the same can be said for Beethoven’s string quartet op.74. The program concludes with the piano quartet in G minor, KV 478. It is performed by members of the Van Swieten Society, who also play on old instruments or copies thereof.
