1994. The Wall fell a few years back, musicians from the former Eastern Bloc are coming to the Netherlands.
In 2024 we have few positive connotations with Russia. It’s a repressive dictatorship that meddles in wars and instigations in neighboring countries. One would nearly forget the beauty this country has to offer, like its music.
1994 was a different time, and the western world was ready to discover Eastern Europe. Today we will hear two small choirs, one from Russia and one from Georgia. The Russian ensemble Kafedra showcases two major aspects of Russian singing. In the first part of the concert, we’ll hear religious music: ancient Byzantine chants and breathtakingly beautiful polyphonic music from later periods. Then we will hear folk music, including Cossack songs, Tatar songs, and the well-known Wolgalied.
Georgian music is lesser known but not to be missed. You’ll agree once you hear the Kolcheti ensemble perform. The songs of this distant land sound remarkably familiar to us in the Netherlands. It has a somewhat medieval feel, reminiscent of Dutch folk music. Although we do not understand this difficult language, Georgian, but these vibrant melodies and melodious harmonies create an indescribably beautiful concert.
