Episode #7: Tanya Schaap. A podcast about Jazz with colourful guests and swinging music by Ben van den Dungen
Art Blakey once said: “Jazz has to be danceable and has to have the blues”. Dancing and the Blues is a podcast about jazz. Jazz musicians Ben van den Dungen, Tom Ridderbeekx and Thijs Nissen, receive colourful guests with tall tales, in-depth conversations and a large dose of swinging music predominate. A look behind the scenes of the fine fleur of the (inter)national jazz top, with live performances from our studio!
Violinist Tanya Schaap is the founder and artistic director of Musica Extrema. She studied the classical violin at the conservatories of Amsterdam and Rotterdam. She then left for Argentina to continue her studies with Fernando Suarez Paz (the regular violinist of the legendary bandoneon player and composer Astor Piazzolla). She is also a part of the “Café de los Maestros” orchestra from Argentina in which she plays the violin parts alongside Fernando Suarez Paz. With this orchestra, the Argentinian version of the Cuban Buena Vista Social Club, Tanya tours all over the world.
Tango Extremo
Ever since its formation in 2003, Tango Extremo has experienced a development that can be called at least remarkable. The orchestra has performed on almost all large and small concert stages in the Netherlands, but other countries have also had the opportunity to get acquainted with this ensemble many times.
The group was founded by violinist Tanya Schaap, who has been the artistic driving force behind the trio from the very beginning.
The repertoire is very diverse and very unique in its style. Angles of approach including European and South American folklore, classical music, jazz and Brazilian music are combined with “tango nuevo”.
In recent years, the group has specialised in the music from the Argentinian Río de la Plata area and various crossovers from the tango nuevo idiom. On a national level, the ensemble has managed to conquer a place in the Dutch music scene that is hard to imagine without it. The group plays on the most diverse stages, varying from jazz festivals to classical concert halls to tango salons.
