The album Farewell Shalabiye by the band NO Blues
At the end of the calendar year we join in on a party in Disc-Cover. This year, NO Blues, the Dutch formation with international influences and appearance, celebrate their 10-year anniversary. They have added lustre to this event with – of course – a new album: Oh Yeah Habibi. However, we go back in time ten years, to their debut album Farewell Shalabiye. You know that we from Disc-Cover do not just introduce any album to you; we present records that have played an important and prominent role in the history of roots music or stood out in some way. With Farewell Shalabiye history was written: for the first time American roots music and Arabic folk music were blended together to create the Arabicana of NO Blues. NO Blues perfected this hybrid synthesis between two completely different musical styles and cultures in the course of the decade. Whether Farewell Shalabiye is the best album of the quintet may be up for discussion but it was the pioneer album that paved the way for an entirely new musical genre. And that is exactly what we focus on at Disc-Cover. Of course we will also present quite a few new NO Blues sounds from their anniversary album Oh Yeah Habibi.
