Albums that are of artistic importance for the evolution of roots music are usually of minor importance in history. In spite or actually because of that we at Disc-Cover set great store by them and introduce you to these albums in full. For example, today the album  Ça-i! by singer Marilis Orionaa from Béarn. Béarn is not a region that immediately brings all sorts of associations to mind. As part of Gascony and hidden in the embranchments of the Pyrenees, the area mainly depends on the agricultural sector, a bit of tourism and a bit of scattered industry, economically speaking. Béarn is rich in a different way, namely through its cultural and historical heritage. Béarn has its own variant of the langue d’oc, the Occitan language, with its roots preceding the Middle Ages. This heritage can be heard in Orionaa’s songs, which are about the events in current Béarn; the echoes of the mountains and hills ring through her music. Her first EP ‘Balansun’ was released in 1992. That album was still quite traditional, almost classical. But with her first full disc ‘Ça-i!’, she formed the outlines of her own style; a recognisable sound and appealing songs, notwithstanding that you can’t understand a word of it. In 1994, the low countries encountered this self-willed, somewhat mysterious singer/composer from Béarn for the first time thanks to a performance at the Dranouter Folk Festival. That performance left an indelible impression. Twenty years later, it’s only time for her fourth album. A good reason to go back to where it all began…
