Interesting albums from the folk and roots music history, by Marius Roeting.
Tonight the LP Blues in Chicago by Blind Blake

Wolverlei is named to be the most important and best Dutch acoustic folk group by many experts. They only made two LPs. One of the driving forces behind that group was Kees van der Poel. He already was important before in the formation Wargaren. Van der Poel is a multi-instrumentalist (a.o. the button box, hurdy-gurdy and other string instruments). Nowadays he is touring with his old buddy Leo Wijnkamp.
Wijnkamp may not be very famous in the Netherlands, but internationally this guitarist has made a pretty good name. He ended up on the label of Kicking Mule by Stefan Grossman in the 1970s and toured with Grossman, Marcel Dadi, John Renbourn and Davey Graham. Wijnkamp is an authority on the ragtime for guitar, a passion he shares with Van der Poel. Their shared interest is particularly about the magnificent guitarist Blind Blake. Van der Poel is able to make discourses on the technical side of Blake’s play. We dediced to leave that out. But in this Disc-Cover Van der Poel’s choice for the masterpiece stands central: Blind Blake in Chicago. He bought this LP in the 1960’s and he was and still is addicted to that album. He himself says the following about it: “Blues in Chicago is a compilation LP in the Classic Jazz Masters series of the Riverside label with reproductions of old 78 spinning albums of Blind Blake from 1926 to 1932 on Paramount Records. It is my favourite album and in the meantime a collector’s item. The editor of this series was Dutch art historian, philosopher and blues and jazz collector Hans R. Rookmaaker (book: Jazz, blues, spirituals, Wageningen: Zomer & Keuning, 1960)”.

We will broadcast the whole album, provided with a commentary given by Van der Poel and we add a track by Wolverlei and Leo Wijnkamp. This addition is particularly meant as an introduction to the recordings of the series Acoustic Roots by the Concertzender on 3 March, wherein Kees van der Poel and Leo Wijnkamp will give a concert. So string pickers: pay attention!!!
