In the history of Dutch folk music, you cannot deny several crucial albums, for example, Fungus’ debut album, de Wolverei albums, Irolt’s Gudrun Sege and several more. One could easily add Tot leerlinghe ende vermaeck and the formation of Tail Toddle to that list. That was one of the first albums with only Dutch-speaking folk songs, like the beggar’s song Merck toch hoe sterck. There’s also a collection of songs that received a place in the repertoire of many folk bands: Al van den droogen sharing, O dag, O lang gewenste dag, Twee coninckskinderen, Kaap’ren varen, Allen die willen naar Iseland gaan, and Genoveva van Brabant. Three brothers Jan, Nol and Stephan and their sister Bianca formed a real family bond. The band never got as popular as the other bands mentioned, but several of their songs stick around. After about four years, the band disbanded, and only Jan Duindam stayed active in the world of music. The string player (guitar, mandoline, bouzouki, banjo, dulcimer) released a solo project just before Tail Toddle disbanded. It was his first solo record with songs that we would now place in the singer-songwriter genre. In addition to the album Tot leerlinghe ende vermaeck, we’ll listen to a few songs from that solo record. To complete the episode, we’ll listen to two tracks from Tail Toddle’s debut EP from a German record label released a year before Tot leerlinghe ende vermaeck. That five-track EP is impossible to find, not on eBay, Craigslist, Spotify, or Deezer… However, we will listen to two tracks from that EP in this episode; they were dug up from Concertzender’s archives.
