fri 5 may 2017 20:00 hour

A musical journey through the south of Italy with a special Disco Volante. Episode 5

Roberto De Simone, the founder of Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare

This programme is dedicated to the music from Campania, a region in Southern Italy, with Naples as its capital. The city of Naples is nearly three thousand years old and has survived many different rulers. It became the largest city of South Italy when the parts united in 1861. It from this region the traditional music genres of villanella, tarantella and tammurriata comes from. This kind of music is being played by both the inhabitants and by professional musicians. But Naples is mainly associated with ‘canzone napoletana’, which has a extensive repertoire of ‘songs’. The ‘canzone napoletana’s’ golden age started in the early 19th century and would continue until the 1930’s. Many songs have become world famous and have been sung by both international pop musicians and by tenors. Naples is also the birth place of the theatre music genre ‘opera buffa’. During the whole 18th century, both Naples and Vienna where the capitals of European music. Their musical view is still filled with different artists and genres today. Influences from all over the world travel to Naples all the time, where the musicians there reshape it. The musical heritage of South Italy is even richer, like the traditions from regions like Apulia, Calabria and Sicily , that are just as strong and ancient as the ones from the Capania region. That’s why our journey through southern Italy continues on for the next few months, with ritual songs, protest songs, work songs, satirical and love songs, lullabies, nursery rhymes and music of today. And much more.
